Round Cairn, Garreg, Llanfair
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 1153 Trust : Gwynedd Community : Llanfair Unitary authority : Gwynedd NGR : SH59903095 Site Type (preferred type first) : BRONZE AGE CAIRN Status : Snowdonia National Park
Description : Roughly 0.5m - 0.75m high mound of stones generally covered with gorse and turf. Despite the addition of clearance material on to the site during recent times, enough remains to suspect that this feature could represent a Bronze Age cairn about 15m across. <1>
About 15m across to the S of Carreg one of the larger standing stones in the Fonllech Hir group in the parish of Llanfair, lies the remains of a cairn 15 - 16m across and 0.5m high. The true nature of the site and the presence or absence of features such as kerb is problematic as the mound is turf grown and has been much obscured in recent times by field clearance, but its roundness and its juxtaposition to the standing stone strongly suggest a sepulchral origin. <2>
Large, quite well defined ring cairn (c.20m in diameter), scheduled monument (Me 107). During the assessment process it was decided to route the pipe trench to the north of the road at this point avoiding both scheduled areas. <8>
As described. The interior is hummocky with some cavities as if material has been removed from the site in the not too distant past. Certainly there are two piles of large clearance stones nearby. There is nothing about this monument to prove it was a funerary or ritual site - it is much larger than those on Moel Goedog although there are large cairn circles elsewhere e.g. above Egryn (Smith 2001).
